The secondary college maintained a fleet of high-end, yet antiquated, workstations in their Design and Tech Labs that demanded a very high level of support from the ICT Team. Additionally, the infrastructure did not allow for possible future options such as BYOD. Due to issues with network connectivity to the premises, the team had established that an on-premise solution was essential, so the availability of skilled, local support was a significant consideration. Given the demands of its modern high-college environment, reliability was vital.
The secondary college management and ICT team sought solutions from a number of technology businesses, but only one took into account the on-premise requirement.
“Moncrieff listened to our issues and suggested different options and solutions, then helped us to work through the different possible outcomes. Most importantly, once we made a choice, they were able to set up a test scenario on our own network, to show us that it would work. They were the only ones to offer that,” said the college’s Network Administrator.
After months of consultation the choice, ultimately, was a VDI solution. Phase One allowed teachers and students to experience the VDI solution while using their familiar work tools. Once the concept had proven to suit the college’s technology and budgetary needs, a highly-available hardware solution was installed. A 3D2Go solution delivered VDI of graphics enhanced workflows, vital in the college’s technology labs.
“We could not afford to disrupt teaching time, so it was essential to complete the installation without downtime,” commented the college’s ICT Coordinator. “Moncrieff did pretty much everything up until the kids started using the system.”
Thanks to the successful proof of concept, the team was able to confidently approach the transition. Part of the process involved skill transfer to the college’s team, ensuring self-sufficiency after handover. As with any project the availability of strong technology partner support was a blessing.
“There was a hiccup at first with logon times taking longer than we liked. Moncrieff’s engineer had the skills to quickly identify the cause, and used his vendor relationship to identify a solution that fixed it,” explained the college’s Network Administrator.
One of the biggest successes is the time the VDI solution saves the ICT team: “We can now perform updates and install software once centrally, instead of having to go to each machine. If we roll the solution out to BYOD, this potentially means we avoid individually updating up to 1,600 machines. It is a huge time saver! It isn’t only the ICT team noticing the difference. The teachers are spending less time resolving software issues and bugs, meaning they have more time to focus on teaching students.”
“Moncrieff displayed very good technical expertise, from their original proposal, throughout design, testing and rollout. They were very knowledgeable and they really listened to us. We couldn’t fault them.”
For Perth’s next generation of business professionals, doctors, designers and IT experts, the future is bright thanks to the dedicated ICT and management team. The secondary college is able to build on its strong reputation for giving youngsters the best start, and turn out graduates equipped to take part in shaping Australia’s digital economy.
